UNC Softball Hosts NCC North-South Tournament At Island Grove Park In Greeley
THE WEEK AHEAD: The UNC women's softball team (8-11 overall) will serve as the host to the North Central Conference North/South I Tournament on April 12-13 at Island Grove Park. All nine NCC school will take part in the round-robin style tournament. UNC will also host Augustana in an NCC doubleheader on Friday at the UNC Softball Field beginning at 1 p.m.
SENIOR DAY ON FRIDAY: The UNC softball squad will honor three seniors this Friday as the Bears' close out their home season against Augustana at 1 p.m. Seniors Kim Kelly (Billings, Mont.), Cristin Dumler (Kersey, Colo.) and Rachel Van Hook (El Segundo, Calif.) will all be honored before the first game on Friday.
BEARS GO 1-2 AT NEBRASKA-OMAHA TOURNAMENT: The Bears tallied a mark of 1-2 at the Nebraska-Omaha tournament this past Saturday. The Bears lost to Missouri Southern Lions, 1-0, in nine innings and then bounced back wtih a 1-0 (8 innings) victory over Emporia State Hornets. The Bears closed out the tourney action with a 3-1 loss to the Washburn Lady Blues.
PETERSON SWINGS A HOT BAT: UNC junior catcher Erin Peterson (Great Falls, Mont.) continues to be on fire at the plate. Peterson leads the team in batting average (.357), hits (20), doubles (9), RBI (9) and slugging percentage (.571). Peterson, the Bears' starting catcher, has also gunned down seven runners trying to steal.
HAUN'S STREAK SNAPPED AT NINE: UNC sophomore OF Lindsay Haun (Longmont, Colo.) saw her season-high nine-game hitting streak come to a halt in the Bears' 1-0 win over Emporia State. Kim Kelly (Billings, Mont.) has the Bears' longest current hitting streak at four games.
GOING, GOING, GONE: The Bears have crushed five home runs this season through 16 contests. Stephani Miller, Lindsey Jorgensen, Erin Peterson, Jana Pintz and Rachel Van Hook have all taken one beyond the fences in competition.
UP NEXT: UNC will travel to CU-Colorado Springs on Wed., April 16, to take on the Mountain Lions.
THE HEAD COACH: Linda Witt is in her third season as the head coach of the UNC softball squad. During her tenure with the Bears, Witt has turned the squad into a contender for the North Central Conference championship. Witt was named the Co-Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Bears to a 28-18 overall mark and an 11-5 record in league action. Witt has compiled an overall mark of 49-47 in this her third season as the Bears' head coach. Witt played for the Bears' during her college days and led the squad to the NCAA championship game in 1978 before falling to UCLA, 2-0, in the title contest. A 1978 graduate of UNC, Linda Witt spent 20 years as a teacher and coach at University High School (UNC Laboratory School) in Greeley.
