THE BEAR FACTS
The Bears went 3-2 at the Charleston Southern Tournament this past weekend.
Shortstop Morgan Dahlman and third baseman Ashley Martinosky each tallied five RBI during the tournament. Dahlman went 5-for-15 for the tournament with a double and a home run. Martinosky went 6-for-18 and posted two doubles and a home run.
Against Western Carolina, Northern Colorado had a tougher time, comitting four errors and enduring a 10-run sixth inning from the Catamounts. Freshman Hillarie Van Otterloo picked up the loss for the Bears. Mackenzie Barrett went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Northern Colorado got off to a good start in the second day of the tournament with wins over Brown and Rutgers. Shea Carpenter stifled Brown's offense, giving up six hits and striking out eight on her way to a complete game. Dahlman went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. The Bears almost let one slip away against Rutgers, as Northern Colorado led 6-0 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Scarlet Knights scored four runs before Carpenter came in and shut the door on Rutgers. Backup shortstop Jennifer Huston went 3-for-4 against the Scarlet Knights.
The Bears weren't able to get the bats going against Oakland in the final game of the day, losing 6-0 in the elimination round of the tournament. Northern Colorado committed four errors for the game. Milligan pitched a complete game, striking out eight and giving up three earned runs.
Northern Colorado is 0-6 against Colorado State since the 1999 season.
The Bears are 0-1 against Texas Tech and Wichita State. Northern Colorado has never faced Missouri State.
MARTINOSKY A HOUSE OF POWER
Ashley Martinosky has shown a complete turnaround from last season. She finished with a .213 batting average and struck out 21 times in 89 at-bats. This season, she leads the team in batting average (.400), home runs (five), RBI (15) and slugging percentage (.825).
THE COMEBACK KID
After a hand injury last season turned her into a question mark, Jessica Milligan has defied the odds. Milligan leads the team with a 4.88 ERA and 29 strikeouts. She has also pitched three complete games this season.
The Bears have just two home regular season games this season. They will host the Division II Regis Rangers on April 18 at Butler-Hancock Softball Field in a doubleheader. The only other time Northern Colorado will be at home is April 28-29, when the Bears host the Division I Independent Tournament. Northern Colorado will play a total of 41 games on the road.
