Softball Suffers Two Setbacks At Gene Cusic Classic In Fort Myers, Fla.

The University of Northern Colorado women's softball squad dropped a pair of contests Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. UNC lost to North Central Conference opponent North Dakota, 2-0, and then fell to Franklin Pierce by the same 2-0 count later in the day.

UNC's record is now 6-7 overall in 2003.

The University of North Dakota used a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning to score a 2-0 victory over the Bears on Wednesday.

North Dakota started the fifth inning with a single and a double. UNC starting pitcher Cristin Dumler then retired the next two batters before the Fighting Sioux hit a single down the left field line to score both runners.

UNC was unable to get untracked and Dumler suffered the loss.

For the second straight day, UNC and Franklin Pierce hooked up on the field. UNC scored a 7-3 win on Tuesday, but Franklin Pierce turned the tables on the Bears on Wednesday as the took a 2-0 victory.

Franklin Pierce scored both of its runs in the fourth inning. Franklin Pierce had its two leadoff hitters reach via single and then UNC starting pitcher Stephani Miller retired the next two batters. But Franklin Pierce benefitted from a UNC error to score both runs and take the contest, 2-0.

The only UNC batter to tally more than one hit was Lindsay Haun. Haun went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the rest of the Bears' offense was unable to get going and Miller took the defeat.
