Bears Go 2-1 In Final Day At Charleston Southern Tourney

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - The University of Northern Colorado softball team went 2-1 in its final day of competition at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Saturday.

In the first game, junior Shea Carpenter had no trouble stifling the offense of Brown University in an 8-1 Northern Colorado win. Carpenter pitched a complete game, struck out eight and allowed one earned run. Morgan Dahlman led the Bears offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBI and a home run.

The Bears took their momentum into the second game against Rutgers and jumped out to a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Scarlet Knights put four runs on the board in the inning, but Carpenter came in to shut the door and give the Bears a 6-4 win. Backup shortstop Jennifer Huston broke loose with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Freshman pitcher Hillarie Van Otterloo picked up her first win of the season, going 6.1 innings and giving up one earned run.

After the two wins, Northern Colorado finished 4-2 in pool play and was named the No. 10 seed. The Bears were matched up against the No. 7 seed Oakland University Grizzlies. Northern Colorado had trouble getting the bats going, recording four hits in a 6-0 loss. Junior Jessica Milligan pitched her second complete game of the tournament, striking out eight and giving up three earned runs.

The Bears are now 6-9 on the season and will take on in-state foe Colorado State in a doubleheader starting at noon on Tuesday in Fort Collins.
