Bears Split Games Against Furman, Western Carolina

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - The University of Northern Colorado softball team went 1-1 in the first day of action at the Charleston Southern Tournament at Gahagan Park.

In the first game of the day, the Bears (4-8) got a complete game and four strikeouts from Jessica Milligan to lead them to a 7-2 win over Furman. Casey Hogue led Northern Colorado offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run. Milligan is now 2-2 on the season.

Northern Colorado committed seven errors in the second game of the day, which helped Western Carolina to a 15-8 win over the Bears. Junior Shea Carpenter picked up the loss for the Bears to drop her season record to 2-3. Despite the shortcomings in the field, Northern Colorado got strong offensive performances from Ashley Martinosky, Mackenzie Barrett and Ashley Geist. Martinosky slammed her fifth home run of the year with a two-run shot, and Barrett smashed a three-run homer. Ashley Geist finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

The Bears will play three games on Saturday, starting with Brown at 8 a.m. and then Rutgers at 10 a.m. Championship tournament play will begin at 3 or 5 p.m. mountain time.
