Softball Drops Pair of Games

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado softball team fell 9-3 in the morning game against Wisconsin and 8-5 to Southern Utah in the afternoon contest of the Red Desert Classic to move to 1-3 on the young season.
The Bears jumped out to the early lead against Wisconsin, scoring one in the top of the first inning and one in the top of the second, but the Badgers answered with two in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2. Wisconsin scored three more in the bottom of the third to take the 5-2 lead. The Bears got one more in the top of the fourth, but could not put any more runs on the board as the Badgers scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 9-3 win.
Freshman Jessie Schoepflin went three-for-five as the lead-off batter and scored two runs for the Bears, while Kelli Henderson, Katelyn Landorf and Morgan Dahlman each added one hit. Mackenzie Barrett and Heather Buckley both tallied an RBI for the Bears.
Jamie Juelfs started in the circle for the Bears, throwing 2.1 innings and facing 12 batters. She gave up four runs on three hits with two walks and two strike outs. Henderson threw the final 3.2 innings, facing 23 batters giving up three runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out four.
Wisconsin scored nine runs on 10 hits with a home run by Olivarez.
In the second game of the day, the Bears scored five runs on seven hits, with a pair of hits each by Courtney Maihi and Buckley.
Southern Utah scored one in the top of the first, but the Bears answered with two of their own. Maihi singled up the middle and then scored on a Barrett home run. SUU added two in the top of the second and the Bears tied it up in the bottom of the second inning. Henderson reached on an error and scored on a triple by Maihi, her second hit in as many innings.
After holding the Thunderbirds scoreless in the top of the third inning, the Bears took the lead, 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning after adding two to their total. Jaycee Lovato reached on a fielder's choice and scored on the home run by James. In the top of the fifth inning, Southern Utah scored three and added two in the top of the seventh for the 8-5 victory.
Juelfs again started the game in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings giving up six runs on six hits with three walks and three strike outs in 26 batters faced. Henderson took over, throwing 2.1 innings giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and two strike outs in 13 batters faced.
Southern Utah scored eight runs on 11 hits with five extra-base hits.
Northern Colorado closes play in the Red Desert Classic with a tilt against Utah tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
