Softball announces open tryout
Northern Colorado softball coach Mark Montgomery has announced plans to host a walk-on tryout at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Butler-Hancock Softball Field. The tryout is open to any full-time Northern Colorado student or incoming freshman.

Softball places seven on 2011 PCSC Commissioner's Honor Roll
Northern Colorado Softball had seven student-athletes named Wednesday to the 2011 Pacific Coast Softball Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Bears had two freshmen, two sophomores, a junior and two seniors honored, including freshman Megan Wilkinson, who notched a team-best 3.86 GPA during the 2010-11 season while pursuing a degree in Biology.

Softball's haul grows to 12 with Pollak addition
Northern Colorado coach Mark Montgomery saw his inaugural recruiting class increase to an even dozen Thursday when he officially announced the signing of junior-college transfer Jamie Pollak. She'll come to Greeley as a junior after spending her freshman season at Fordham University and her sophomore season at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.

Henderson earns PCSC Divisional Player of the Year
Northern Colorado’s Kelli Henderson capped an impressive senior season Tuesday when the Pacific Coast Softball Conference anointed her its 2011 Mountain Division Co-Player of the Year. She led a group of eight Bears selected to the 2011 All-PCSC Mountain team. Northern Colorado coach Mark Montgomery was one of three coaches to split Coach of the Year honors.

The Northern Colorado senior finished her playing career last weekend with two dominating pitching performances against Seattle in earning her first Mountain Division honor on Wednesday. She split the weekly award with Portland State junior pitcher Karmen Holladay.

Kailee Vessey launched a three-run homer to left in the top of the fifth of game two Sunday to put the Bears ahead 10-0, and Jamie Juelfs finished off a one-hitter in the bottom of the inning to help Northern Colorado bounce back from a 6-1 loss in the opener.

Softball seniors Kelli Henderson and Jamie Juelfs took part in Northern Colorado's spring commencement ceremony Saturday morning at Nottingham Field. They both then shut down Seattle in the pitching circle Saturday afternoon as the Bears swept past the Redhawks in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader at Butler-Hancock Softball Field.

Northern Colorado lost 4-0 and 10-2 in five innings to Portland State on Sunday and dropped two games behind the Viks in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Mountain Division standings. Both teams, which split a doubleheader Saturday in Greeley, have four games left in their regular seasons.

Colorado-Colorado Springs withdraws from Thursday softball game
The Mountain Lions on Monday submitted a request to cancel this week's nonconference game at Butler-Hancock Softball Field. Northern Colorado honored the request with the understanding that UCCS would fulfill the game contract next season, with a game to be played on an undetermined date.

Buol earns Bears' fourth PCSC weekly honor
The first two home runs of Melanie Buol's college career caught the eye of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. The league honored her late Monday night with this week's Mountain Division Player of the Week award after she led the Bears to a 2-2 split at Utah Valley last weekend.

Megan Hamilton had five hits Saturday, and Melanie Buol continued to showcase a new-found home run stroke as Northern Colorado split a doubleheader with Utah Valley and gave head coach Mark Montgomery his 301st career victory. Softball earns first-day split at Utah Valley
The Bears won a blowout and then lost a nail-biter Friday afternoon in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader split at Utah Valley. Melanie Buol led a 14-hit attack in a 10-1 win in the first game that was Northern Colorado’s ninth victory in 10 games. The Bears then squandered a one-run lead in the fourth inning of a 4-3 loss in game two.

Softball's streak snapped with Weber State split
It took extra innings Saturday, but Weber State finally found a way put an end to the Bears' impressive run. Northern Colorado won the first game 7-6 at Wildcat Softball Field to run its streak to eight games -- its longest stretch since beginning play at the NCAA Division I level -- but then saw its momentum halted with a 3-2 nine-inning loss in game two.

Montgomery adds three more softball recruits
Northern Colorado coach solidified his first Bears recruiting class late Thursday night with the addition of three student-athletes to his 2011-12 crop. High school seniors Jaicy Sutak and Morgan Yuhas and transfer Lindsey Smith have all committed to the Bears for the 2011-12 season and will join the eight additions Montgomery inked in November, during the NCAA’s early-signing period.

Softball's winning streak grows to seven
Megan Hamilton and Kelli Henderson had four hits apiece Friday, and Henderson struck out seven in seven innings to help the Bears sweep Weber State 6-3 and 10-5 in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader. Megan and Erin Wilkinson both hit home runs, too, for Northern Colorado, which won for the seventh consecutive time and improved to a perfect 6-0 in the PCSC.

The Bears scored nine runs in two innings Wednesday to take care of Colorado State with a 10-1 win in five innings. Northern Colorado won for the fifth straight time by knocking out five hits and drawing five walks.

The Bears lost 2-1 and 10-7 to the Division II Grizzlies on Thursday night to fall to 1-3 this season at Butler-Hancock Softball Field and 3-28 overall. Northern Colorado, which finished 10-10 in its inaugural run through the PCSC last season, will start its 2011 conference schedule at home on Saturday against Idaho State.

Northern Colorado started strong in both of its games Saturday, leading into the fourth inning against Southern Utah and Utah on the final day of the Utah Valley Invitational at Ute Field. The Bears weren't able to finish off either contest, though, and they fell 4-2 to the Thunderbirds and then 5-3 to Utah.

Softball splits with Colorado State in home opener
The Bears won for the second time in four games Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rams at Butler-Hancock Softball Field. Northern Colorado scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a 3-3 tie and pull away for a 7-5 victory. The Bears then gave up the first seven runs in the second game and lost 9-5 to split their first two home games of the 2011 season.

The Bears ran into two tough pitchers Saturday against No. 20 Oklahoma State on the second day of the Mizuno Classic. The Bears mustered just four hits across the two games -- with the Erins (Geddis and Wilkinson) each finishing 2-for-5 at the plate -- and lost 8-0 in five innings of game one before falling 6-0 to the Cowgirls in the nightcap.

Northern Colorado softball got its bats going Saturday during the second day of the Arizona State Wilson/DeMarini Invational at Farrington Stadium. But the Bears still weren't able to snap what has now become a seven-game losing streak in a 9-0 five-inning defeat to the No. 7 Sun Devils and a 13-5 six-inning setback against New Mexico State.

Pitching woes continue for softball at New Mexico
Northern Colorado softball found itself down 6-1 before it could blink Friday night at New Mexico and the Bears failed to win two in-a-row for the first time this season in an 11-3 loss at Lobo Field. The Bears (1-6) scratched together 10 hits for the second straight game and had three players finish 2-for-3 at the plate. A season-high 10 earned runs surrendered, though, was too much to overcome.

The Bears received 49 points overall to come in behind Mountain Division preseason-favorite Portland State. Softball's 2011 schedule features record 17 home games
It’s going to take awhile for Northern Colorado softball to reach the home portion of its 2011 schedule, but once it does, a school-record 17 games will be awaiting the Bears at Butler-Hancock Softball Field. First-year coach Mark Montgomery officially unveiled his first spring schedule Thursday, Dec. 2, and his first slate with Northern Colorado looks like a good one.

University of Northern Colorado head softball coach Mark Montgomery announced today, the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent for the 2011-12 season. Kelci Cheney, Mikayla Duffy, Melissa Marcovecchio, Tianalia Faasua, Nicole Hudson, Kaitlin Flynn, Ashleigh Waterland, and Janelle Lopez have committed to the play for the Bears in the spring of 2012.

Softball lends a hand in Greeley community
Northern Colorado softball officially capped its 2010 fall exhibition season recently by taking part in a few community-service projects in and around the Greeley community. The Bears lent a hand at Weld Food Bank on Oct. 11 spent some time with some budding softball players at Dos Rios Elementary School in Evans on Oct. 13 and then helped out with some arts-and-crafts projects at Bonnell Nursing Home in Greeley on Oct. 14.

Softball finishes fall with impressive 7-1 record
Northern Colorado softball ended its first fall season under new coach Mark Montgomery on Saturday with a 1-1 split against Colorado State and Western Nebraska Community College. The Bears fell behind 4-0 to the Rams early Saturday afternoon at Butler-Hancock Softball before nearly mounting a comeback in a 4-3 defeat. They then scored six runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 7-3 victory against the Cougars.

Softball earns Colorado's highest NFCA academic honor
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) recently released its softball academic honors for the 2009-10 season, and Northern Colorado earned the highest placement of any Colorado program. The Bears finished the 2010 season with a 3.243 team grade-point average, which ranked them 61st on the Division I list and is the highest submitted GPA achieved by any softball team in Colorado, regardless of division.

Softball continues perfect fall, wins all four at Triple Crown Classic
The Northern Colorado softball team and new head coach Mark Montgomery have now played six games this fall and are yet to taste defeat. The Bears participated in the Triple Crown Fall College Classic over the weekend, winning all four games they played.

Softball starts fall with pair of victories
The initial returns on the Mark Montgomery era of Northern Colorado softball are good. Perfect, in fact. The Bears began their first fall exhibition season under Montgomery on Sunday, Sept. 19, with two victories in two chances -- a 6-3 win against Western Nebraska Community College and a 2-1 win later in the day against instate-rival Colorado State.
