Kollman Gearhart And Vinnie Fallico Both Win A Pair Of Singles Matches At The Balloon Festival

Albuquerque, N.M.- Graduate student Kollman Gearhart and junior Vinnie Fallico both won a pair of singles matches to highlight Northern Colorado's men's tennis team action at the Balloon Festival from Oct. 5-7. During the tournament the Bears ended up with a 5-9 record in singles play and a 2-2 mark in doubles action.
The tournament consisted of a total of nine teams with Air Force, Denver, Glendale College, Northern Arizona, New Mexico, New Mexico State, New Mexico Military Institute and Western New Mexico also participating.
Fallico started the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Wilton Atkins (Western New Mexico) in the Singles `A' Draw. Fallico then fell to Joe Wood (New Mexico) 6-1, 6-1. In the consolation round the junior defeated then lost to Chris Toli (New Mexico MI) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2.
Also in the singles `A' draw, senior Austin Nunn fell three times to A. De Mucha (New Mexico State) 6-0, 6-3; Jake Tracey (Northern Arizona) 7-5, 6-7, 7-6; and Jeffrey Morys (Northern Arizona) 6-1, 6-3.
In the `B' draw Gearheart had a strong first day with wins over Guy Rutten (New Mexico State) 6-2, 7-5 and Greg Ferry (Air Force) 6-1, 6-4. In the round of 16, Gearhart fell to David Flodberg (Northern Arizona) 5-7, 6-0, 6-1. In the consolation round, the graduate student lost to Luke Stupar 3-6, 6-2, 5-2 ret. (inj.). Greg Werner, after falling in the first round to Alex Beaussart (Air Force) 6-3, 6-3, rallied and picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Matt Fasko (Glendale Community College). Werner then ended his tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Craig Duran (New Mexico State).
The doubles team of Gearhart/Werner fell Derek Lynch/Joe Wood (New Mexico) 8-4 in the first round. The other NC doubles duo of Fallico/Nunn, after falling in the first round, rallied and won both their matches on the second and third day over David Flodberg/Brelin Powell (Northern Arizona) 8-6 and Johnny Buckingham/Mike Gies (Air Force) 8-6.
Next on the schedule for Northern Colorado's men's team is the start of the spring season against Denver on Jan. 26.
