OGDEN, Utah -- Both Northern Colorado Men's and Women's Tennis will open the Big Sky Tennis 2014 Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, April 25. The men's and women's teams will travel to the tournament for the first time together since the Bears became eligible for conference postseason play in 2008.

Both men's and women's teams qualified for the No. 6 seed, each opening up the tournament on Friday. The women will first play No. 3 seed Sacramento State at 11 a.m. at the Gold River Racquet Club while the men will follow against Northern Arizona at 3 p.m.

Both teams would advance to the semifinal to face the respective No. 1 seeds if they win the opening round match. Montana sits in the No. 1 seed for the women's bracket while Weber State is the top seed on the men's side.

Head coach Brenda Vlasak led the women's team to the Big Sky Championship over the last three seasons and two previous times in 2008 and 2009. The Bears opened up the conference schedule this spring by going 5-0, winning by at least five points over the first four matches. UNC finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-9 and a conference record of 6-4. In the previous matchup this season against Sacramento State, Northern Colorado fell, 7-0. UNC and SAC have gone head-to-head twice before in the Big Sky Championships.

Head coach Mike Phillips, in his first season at the helm of the men's tennis program, qualified his team to the postseason conference tournament for the first time since UNC became a member of the Big Sky. The men's team opened its conference season with four straight wins, falling in just two doubles matches over that span.
