Men's Tennis defeats NAU for first time in Big Sky play

GREELEY -- The Northern Colorado men's tennis team clinched a tight 4-3 victory over conference rival Northern Arizona at Work Out West on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference action. The win also marked the first time Northern Colorado's men's tennis team defeated the Lumberjacks in Big Sky competition.
"That was a nice conference win for the team today," Northern Colorado coach Tim Bearman said. "The guys showed up ready to make a statement and they played great doubles to set the tone for the entire match."
As Bearman said, Northern Colorado looked ready for a fight form the get-go, beginning with a strong showing in doubles play.
The doubles started off with a strong win at No. 1 when senior Brandon Lupo (Broomfield, Colo.) and sophomore Ben Gendron (Flower Mound, Texas) defeated Robert Martin and Shaun Waters in a close 8-6 decision. The doubles point was clinched when junior duo Jeff Carlson (Yakima, Wash.) and Michael Moya (Whittier, Calif.) defeated Dominic Bermudez and Kester Black 8-3 at the No. 3 position.
"This team has great character and my guys always compete. That's the foundation this program is based on," Bearman said. "We fight for every point and that showed today in the final score."
Lupo continued his winning streak at the No.1 singles position when he beat Waters 6-4, 6-1 contributing to the Bears win. He has now won four straight matches in what is turning out to be a special senior campaign.
The No. 2 and No. 4 positions saw tight three-set matches which lent to the Northern Colorado victory. After winning the first set, Gendron battled back to clinch a third set win over Patrick Schimmelbauer 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
"All the guys played really well but Gendron played his best today when it mattered the most." Bearman said. "To have him clinch the match against a tough player at No. 2 singles was fun to watch."
After dropping the first set, Carlson fought back to defeat Martin 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No.4 which solidified the win for the Bears and victory over the Lumberjacks.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 2 when they hit the road to take on conference rival Eastern Washington in Spokane at 5 p.m. (MT).
