Gendron earns first career Big Sky weekly honor

Big Sky Conference

OGDEN, Utah -- The Big Sky Conference has selected its men's and women's tennis players of the week for matches played between March 13 and 19. Northern Colorado's Ben Gendron is the Men's Player of the Week and Eastern Washington's Moira Hedberg is the Women's Player of the Week.

Gendron, a freshman from Flower Mound, Texas, posted a 6-0 record last week, with three No. 3 singles wins and three No. 1 doubles wins (with teammate Brandon Lupo). He helped Northern Colorado to one of its best men's tennis weekends at the NCAA Division I level, as the Bears finished 2-1 last week, with victories against South Dakota State and Saint Louis and a loss at Creighton.

Gendron didn't drop a set in his three singles matches, and he and Lupo won all of their doubles matches by at least three games.

Gendron's most dominating effort came against Saint Louis' Yehia El Sallaly, where he won 6-1, 6-2.

Hedberg, a freshman from Oxnard, Calif., went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles. On Sunday, she led EWU to an exciting 4-3 win against Seattle, which avenged a tough 4-3 loss to the Redhawks from earlier in the season.

In doubles action, Hedberg, and partner Chrissy Uriarte, found themselves in a must-win situation after Seattle had won at No. 2 doubles, and Eastern had won at No. 3 doubles. It was a nail-biting match that required extra points, but the Eagle duo pulled through with a crucial 9-7 decision over SU's Anna Lambert and Lindsey Newman.

Hedberg then extended her team's lead when she downed Katrina Schwab at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Others nominated
