Men's tennis falls in lone match after two get cancelled

The Northern Colorado men's tennis team faced a tough Big Sky Conference competitor in its first conference match against Eastern Washington on Saturday and lost 6-1.

The Eagles started off taking control of doubles play winning in all three positions. Ilija Cuic and Kyle Koetje defeated Brandon Lupo and Ben Gendron in a close 9-8 (7-5) decision.

The number two spot was also a tight match with Ryan Lane and Jordan Loughlan losing a tight 8-5 match against Mario Navarro and James Russel.

The number three position found Jeff Carlson and Michael Moya falling to Chad Henninger and Julian Sanchez, 8-3.

Singles play saw one victory for the Bears at the number three position with Carlson defeating Navarro in a close three-set battle, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

At the number five position, freshman Gendron fought a hard battle against  Henninger but was defeated 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

At number one, Lupo was defeated by Cuic 6-4, 6-3 while at number two Lane lost to James 6-3, 6-2.

The final singles matches ended with Sanchez defeating Moya 6-3, 6-4 and Northern Colorado's Andre Lepine battling against Koetje but losing 6-1, 6-1 at number six.

The Northern Colorado men did not get to compete in a non-conference match against Seattle due to weather delays but will return to action on February 11 at 2 p.m. against Northern Arizona at Work Out West.
