GREELEY, Colo. - Junior Tom Gempel carded a final round 65 (-5) and four University of Northern Colorado golfers finished atop the leaderboard as the Bears 'Gold' Team claimed the title at its Northern Colorado Invitational held at the Greeley Country Club on Sunday and Monday.
Gempel, who had rounds of 73 and 74 to open the event, had the low round on Monday afternoon, even overcoming a double bogey on the 15th hole. Gempel bested freshman teammate Ron Alford and sophomore teammate Derek Hofmeister by four strokes for the individual title. Senior Kyle Burns was three strokes behind Alford and Hofmeister and his fourth place finish made it 1-2-3-4 for the Bears at the top of the final leaderboard.
Doug Sutter was ninth overall (+12) while Brady Garr finished 12th (+17). Freshman Ryan Boshoven, playing as an individual along with Hofmeister, was 16th (+21).
As a team the Bears were 24 strokes ahead of second place Nebraska-Kearney and 58 strokes ahead of Colorado Mines and the Air Force J.V. teams who tied for third. Colorado Christian finished fifth.
The tournament featured J.V. and Division II teams from around the state and region.
