GREELEY, Colo. - Freshman Ron Alford fired an even par round of 70 and is tied for first place after day one of the Northern Colorado Invitational being held at the Greeley Country Club. Alford's score helped the Northern Colorado "Gold" team to a 11 stroke lead entering Monday's final two rounds of play.
The event, featuring J.V. and Division II teams from the state and region, started with 18 holes on Sunday and will begin again on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start followed by a 1:00 p.m. final round shotgun.
Alford is tied with Nick Hodge of Nebraska-Kearney after 18 holes. Air Force's Shaun O'Bryant is one stroke back in third place with Doug Sutter and Brady Garr and at +2 and tied for fourth place.
Tom Gempel is one stroke behind Sutter and Garr in sixth place (+3) while Kyle Burns is 22nd overall (+9). Playing as individuals, freshman Ryan Boshoven is sixth (+3) and sophomore Derek Hofmeister is 11th (+6).
The Bears combined for a team score of 287 (+7) and are 11 strokes ahead of UNK and 12 strokes ahead of the Air Force J.V. squad. Colorado Mines is fourth and Colorado Christian is fifth.
