LAYTON, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado men's golf team is in ninth place out of 17 teams after the first day of the Purple & Red Invitational, hosted by Weber State and the University of Utah and being held at the Valley View Golf Course.
After struggling in their season-opening tournament at Air Force a week and a half ago (Northern Colorado was 15th of 19 teams), the Bears had rounds of 299 and 291 and are at +14 with one round to play. The Bears are just five strokes behind the Weber State "B" team and six strokes out of seventh place overall (Southern Utah). San Francisco is the overall leader at -8.
Individually Eric Higgins had a pair of rounds of 73 and is at +2 and in 26th place overall. Teammate Jon Stecher is a stroke behind Higgins in 29th place, Kyle Sullivan is one stroke behind that in 35th place and Jordan Ensrud is one stroke behind that (+5) in 41st place. Derek Hofmeister is 84th overall (+15).
Hartford's Maki Kobayashi is the overall leader at -8, including an impressive 6-under round of 66 in the morning on Monday.
Play at the event concludes on Tuesday morning.
