Connell's 2-over leads Men's Golf at Winchester Classic

MEADOW VISTA, Calif. -- Newcomer Steve Connell fired a 2-over-par 74 Friday at Winchester Golf Course and sits in a six-way tie for 11th after the first day of the UC Davis/Nevada Winchester Classic.
Connell's round leaves him six strokes off the lead -- Nevada's Kevin Lucas went 4-under Friday -- and led Northern Colorado Men's Golf to sixth place on the seven-team leaderboard.
The Bears, playing in their final tournament tune-up before next weekend's America Sky Men's Golf Conference Championship, recorded a 305 team score Friday, which was 17 strokes above par and left them 15 strokes off the pace.
UC Davis, co-hosts of the tournament with Nevada, finished at 2-over and leads the field by two strokes. Sacramento State is in second place at 4-over, and Fresno State is third at 7-over.
Play continues on Saturday with an 8 a.m. fixed tee time start and will conclude Sunday.
"Not our best day," Northern Colorado coach Chuck Scheinost said. "It's the first really hard course we have seen this spring, but the guys really grinded it out today. We're still close to the pack and ahead of Pacific, which is a good team."
Freshman Steven Kupcho, who has led Northern Colorado individually in six tournaments this season, struggled in Meadow Vista. His 8-over 80 put him in a tie for 37th and is just his second round of 80 or more strokes this season (81, National Invitational Tournament, third round).
