True-freshman Kupcho earns America Sky weekly honor

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Northern Colorado's Steven Kupcho was honored Monday as the latest America Sky Men's Golf Conference Golfer of the Week after his outstanding performance two weekends ago at the Fireline Towson Invitational. The award was announced by the conference office.
Kupcho, a true freshman from Westminster, Colo., led the Bears in Grasonville, Md., with a runner-up individual performance, while leading the team to a tie for first among 22 teams. Kupcho fired a final-round 4-unde-par 68 at Prospect Bay Country Club. His final round was highlighted by a first-hole birdie, an eagle on No. 4 and two more birdies on Nos. 9 and 15.
For the tournament, Kupcho fired a 211, beating his previous best finish of 219 set in the fall. Northern Colorado, who was seeking its first tournament title in six years, was clipped in a one-hole playoff by Big East Conference-member Seton Hall. Penn State and Navy finished in a tie for third, while America Sky foes Binghamton and Hartford finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Others nominated for this week's ASMGC weekly honor were Binghamton's Trevor Fiedler and Hartford's Anthony Vecchiarelli.
The America Sky Men's Golf Conference Championship, which will award an an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in league history, will be held from April 29 to May 1 at Lake of Isles Golf Course in North Stonington, Conn.
