DENVER – Northern Colorado sophomore-to-be Steven Kupcho, fresh off being named the America Sky Newcomer of the Year, finished as the top amateur on Sunday at the 2012 HealthONE Colorado Open.

The event, which saw several weather delays, was competed at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver. Kupcho finished in a tie for 18th place after totaling 278 over four rounds, for a six-under par.

Kupcho opened the tournament with a first round score of 66, the second lowest of the day and backed it up on Friday with a 67, which tied for the lowest score of the afternoon. The two-round total of 133 put him as the leader after 36 holes with a one-stroke lead. The Westminster, Colo., native had four birdies in a five-hole span on the front nine during Thursday's first round.

On Saturday, Kupcho tallied an even-par round of 72 and finished Sunday by shooting a 73 to finish the tournament at six-under par.

Throughout the tournament, Kupcho birdied the 10th hole on three of the four days, while he had two birdies and two pars on holes three, eight and nine over the weekend.

Northern Colorado alum R.W. Eaks finished the tournament in 11th place after carding an eight-under-par 276 and Derek Tolan won the event at 270 (-14). Eaks shot identical rounds of 66 over the final two rounds to climb the leaderboard and birdied three of the last four holes to end Sunday at five-under.

Kupcho and the remainder of the Bears team begin classes for the fall semester on August 27.
