Gaethje and Hashimoto Head To Omaha For NCAA Championship
Northern Colorado is sending both senior Kenny Hashimoto (141 pounds) and junior Justin Gaethje (157 pounds) to the NCAA Championship for the second time in their careers. Hashimoto is making his first trip to the NCAAs since 2006-07, while this is Gaethje’s second-straight appearance. Both sport records of 0-2 in post-season action.

Grapplers Hope To Bring Home Regional Titles
Northern Colorado travels to Brookings, South Dakota to take place in the NCAA West Regional on Saturday. Automatic berths to the NCAA Championship are on the line as at least the winner of each weight class earns the right to represent the league in Omaha on March 18-20. The Western Wrestling Conference was awarded 14 automatic qualifiers from the West Regional to the NCAA Championship.

Wednesday marks the final home dual for four seniors in Kenny Hashimoto, Ed Matthews, Tony Mustari and Justin Tuell. Three of the four will be in the lineup for the match against Utah Valley at 7:00 p.m. and all four will be honored prior to the beginning of the match.

For the second-straight home match, the Northern Colorado wrestling team won seven of 10 weight classes en route to a victory against a Western Wrestling Conference foe. On Sunday afternoon, the Bears defeated South Dakota State, 29-15 to improve to 2-3 in league action and 3-13 on the season.

Gaethje and Hashimoto Ranked in Second Report by NCAA
In the second of three NCAA wrestling coaches’ panel rankings and the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for the 2009-10 season, Northern Colorado has two wrestlers ranked in each list. Senior Kenny Hashimoto is ranked 21 at 141 pounds according to the coaches’ panel and 12 in the RPI, while junior Justin Gaethje is 31 in the coaches’ rankings and 18 in the RPI at 157 pounds.

The Bears have just three duals remaining before the NCAA West Regional on March 6 at South Dakota State. Luckily for the team, the final three are at home. In a battle of Weld County talent, Northern Colorado freshman Justin Gonzales came out on top over third-ranked Oklahoma State in a rare Friday afternoon wrestling dual. Gonzales scored the only team points for the Bears (1-12), who lost 41-3 to the Cowboys (9-3-1) in front of 927 fans.

Northern Colorado hosts third-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday at noon and then travels to Lincoln for a dual at Nebraska on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Free T-Shirts are being handed out to the first 250 fans on Friday. In the first competition in almost a month, the Northern Colorado wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the Stanford Duals to win its first dual of the season. The Bears (1-8) dropped the first two, losing 48-0 to #22 Oregon State and 34-5 to Stanford before bouncing back to defeat Menlo College 35-3.
