WINDSOR, Colo. - Francis Marion University combined for a first day score of 284 and is the day one leader at the 2006 Division I Independent Men's Golf Championships, being held at Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club and hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.

Francis Marion's Adam Hart leads the individual competition as well, shooting a 3-under round of 69, as he leads a group of three players by a lone stroke. In that group of three is his teammate, Aengus McAllister, Utah Valley State's Nic Van Vuuren and Northern Colorado's Eric Doyle.

Doyle, playing as an individual, fired a 2-under round of 70 to lead all Bears golfers. He is a stroke ahead of teammate Tim Knight (-1) and two strokes ahead of another pair of UNC golfers, Eric Higgins (E) and Kyle Sullivan (E). Other Northern Colorado golfers counting towards the Bears team score are Tom Gempel (16th, +2) and Jordan Ensrud (16th, +2).

Northern Colorado is second in the team competition, five strokes behind FMU. South Dakota State is third, Texas-Pan American is fourth, North Dakota State is fifth, Sacramento State is sixth and Utah Valley State is seventh.

Besides Doyle, Northern Colorado has six other players playing as individuals. That group includes Doug Sutter (24th, +4), Jon Stecher (30th, +5), Kyle Burns (34th, +6), Mike Martin (40th, +7), Ryan Husted (40th, +7) and Derek Hofmeister (43rd, +8).

The second of three rounds in the tournament will begin with 7:30 a.m. tee times on Saturday morning.
