WINDSOR, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado men's golf team sits 13 shots off the lead after the first day of the NCAA Division I Independent Golf Championships, hosted by the Bears at Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club.

Sacramento State leads the tournament with a 5-under par score of 283, while the Bears are tied for fourth at 296.

Northern Colorado's Derek Hofmeister is tied for 8th after shooting an even-par round of 72, one better than Eric Higgins, who went -2 on the back nine.

Kyle Burns finished with a 75, while Kyle Sullivan and Jonathan Stecher had 76's.

Sacramento State's Grant Norton leads the tournament with a four-under par 68.
