Marty English
Position: Defensive Coordinator
College: University of Northern Colorado, 1986
Marty English enters his 13th season on the UNC staff and his second as defensive coordinator. Under English's direction, the Bear defense flourished in 2000. Northern Colorado ranked among the conference leaders in total defense and the defensive highlight of the year was the Sept. 30 performance against Minnesota State-Mankato when the Bears held the Mavericks to a school record minus-46 yards rushing.
Prior to being named defensive coordinator in December, 1999, English coached the Bears' linebackers and special teams. He has coached several All-American linebackers during his tenure, including Jeff Pease, Tom Langer, Brian Munroe, Scott Zimmerman and Jamie Heiner.
A three-year letterwinner at UNC (1983-86), English recorded 82 tackles in his senior season and earned all-conference honorable mention honors. He began his collegiate playing career at Idaho State and was a member of the 1981 Division I-AA national championship team. He transferred to UNC but suffered a serious knee injury which shortened his junior season.
English earned his bachelor's degree in recreation management and his master's degree in physical education from UNC. He spent one year as an assistant baseball coach at Pomona High School in Arvada before joining the UNC staff as a graduate assistant in 1987. A native of Lakewood, he was an all-state football player at Alameda High School. His father, Ron, is a 1962 graduate of UNC and was a first baseman/outfielder for the Bears' baseball team that advanced to four straight College World Series under legendary coach L.C. "Pete" Butler. His brother Mitch also played baseball at UNC.
English, 38, and his wife, Suzie, are the parents of two children, Kelsey and Tyler.
