Brad Bunting, Asst. Coach


Brad Bunting is in his third season on the University of Northern Colorado football coaching staff. Bunting is primarily responsible for the defensive secondary and the special teams. The Bears' defense in 2004 was led by the All-American play of Reed Doughty, Under Bunting's direction, Doughty was named the I-AA Defensive Back of the Year by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Doughty ranked second in the Great West Football Conference with six interceptions. In 2004, place kicker Justin Zaitz earned first-team all-Great West Conference honors. Zaitz led the conference with 13 made field goals last season. UNC ranked 29th in the country in net punting (35.23 yards per punt) in 2003. Bunting spent 2001 and 2002 as athletic director and head football coach at University High School in Greeley. Bunting had previously served as a graduate assistant coach for the Bears in both 1999 and 2000. A native of Kersey, Colo., Bunting enjoyed a standout career at free safety for the Bears from 1995-98. A three-year starter, Bunting recorded 135 tackles and eight interceptions during his career. Bunting tallied another six interceptions in post-season action, including crucial picks in both the 1996 and 1997 national championship games. Bunting earned his bachelor's degree in 1998 and master's degree in 2000, both from UNC. Bunting and his wife, Deanne, have two children, Brendan and Brooke.
