GREELEY, Colo. -- Northern Colorado junior guard Devon Beitzel has been named for a second straight year to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine District 7 Academic All-District team.

To be eligible for selection to the CoSIDA team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and be a starter or important reserve on his/her team. The student-athlete also must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team's games.

Beitzel, the only Bears winter student-athlete to earn the honor, finished fall semester 2009 with a 3.72 GPA in Finance & Accounting and is the second leading scorer (14.5 points per game) for a Northern Colorado men's basketball that is in the midst of one of the best seasons in school history.

He's joined on the District 7 team by Kansas' Cole Aldrich, Wichita State's Graham Hatch, Montana's Ryan Staudacher and Drake's Adam Templeton.

CoSIDA District 7 includes teams from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Beitzel's name will now be moved into the CoSIDA Academic All-American pool, where he could become Northern Colorado first men's basketball academic all-American since Derek Chaney (1989-94) was named to the third team in 1994.
