Brockman Hits For Cycle To Lead Baseball To Victory

GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado senior Zach Brockman hit for the cycle to lead the Bears to an 11-9 victory over Sacramento State in baseball action this afternoon at Jackson Field.

 

Brockman, the lead-off hitter for the Bears, blasted a home run to left field to give Northern Colorado the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. He singled and doubled in the seven-run fifth inning, then tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and scored on a single by Cory Morales to give Northern Colorado its 11th run.

 

Senior catcher John Ray also tallied three hits, including a home run to left field in the fifth inning, while junior third baseman Adam Symons went three-for-four from the plate and scored two runs. The Bears combined for 11 runs on 17 hits, while the Hornets scored nine runs on 15 hits and committed one error.

 

After the Brockman home run in the bottom of the first, Sacramento State answered with a home run by Jeff Hannah in the top of the second inning. The Bears scored their second run in the bottom of the second as Grady Gorman singled and came around to score on a single by second baseman Jeff Horn.

 

In the top of the fourth, the Hornets notched another run off three straight singles, but the Bears again answered, as Symons tripled and then crossed home on a single by Anthony Garcia. Sacramento State scored one more in the top of the fifth when the Bears exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning - as 11 hitters came to the plate.

 

Sacramento State scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull within one, 10-9, but the triple by Brockman and a single by Morales gave the Bears the insurance run, 11-9.

 

Eric Maydew pitched the first six innings of the game for the Bears, and got his fourth victory of the season. He gave up three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. Tyler Pearson picked up his second save of the season, throwing the last two innings, giving up no runs on three hits, walking two and striking out two.

 

Alvaro Orozco pitched the first four innings for the Hornets, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, walking one and striking out none. Cyrus Sarraf came on in relief in the fifth inning, facing five batters without recording an out. He gave up four runs on four hits with one walk and zero strikeouts. Tyler Axelrod threw the final four innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking no one and fanning two.

 

The two teams meet tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in a game that will be tape delayed on Comcast Entertainment Television (channel five in the Denver metro area). Irv Brown and Brian Roth will be providing the talent for the broadcast.
