Bears Stumble at Nebraska, Lose 4-1![]() March 28, 2007
LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska scored three runs in the first inning to beat the University of Northern Colorado baseball team 4-1 on Wednesday, capping a two-game series between the teams. In the opening frame for the Cornhuskers (15-9), Bears' starter Eric Maydew retired the first two batters quickly before allowing a single and a walk to put two runners on. Then on a grounder to third, Bears' (5-17) third baseman Chad Murray committed a throwing error, prolonging the inning and allowing the go-ahead run to score. Two more runs would cross - all unearned - before Maydew induced an easy fly to centerfield. The Huskers put another run on the board in the second before the Bears responded in the top of the fourth. Brad Beaman opened the inning with a double to right field. Two batters later, he advanced to third, and then scored Northern Colorado's only run when John Ray singled him home. After that, the game became a pitcher's dual, with the Bears turning to Chris Reap. Reap shut the Huskers down through his five innings, allowing just five hits while striking out three batters and walking none. Northern Colorado had several good chances to score, putting two runners on in the seventh with one out, and loading the bases in the top of the ninth, but was unable to plate a runner. Zach Brockman went 2-for-4 to lead the Bears, notching the team's first hit of the game with a first-inning single down the leftfield line, before adding a single to center in the eighth. The Bears now head to Arkansas for a pair of games against the Razorbacks, starting on Tuesday, April 3 at 6:05 p.m. MT. |
