Baseball Falls to Nebraska 5-3 to Open Series![]() March 27, 2007
LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Northern Colorado baseball team took an early lead, but ultimately dropped a 5-3 decision to Nebraska, Tuesday on the road. Anthony Garcia and Jeff Horn each earned an RBI walk in a weird second inning that had the Bears (7-14) scoring two runs with no hits and no errors. Nebraska (14-9) surrendered five walks and hit a batter to allow the Bears to get ahead early. The Cornhuskers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third, chasing starter Joe Sawicki from the game. Sawicki finished his 2 2/3 innings of work with two hits and three walks, while striking out one. Garcia tied the game in the top of the fourth when he drove in Brad Beaman on a one-out single to center field. Nebraska took the lead for good in the fifth, and added an insurance run in the seventh to cap the scoring. The game featured a 1:20 rain delay, and a triple-play - the Huskers' first in eight years. In the third, the Bears put runners on first and second after a pair of walks. With Adam Symons up to bat, a hit-and-run was called. Symons hit a shot to right field that was caught and turned into a 9-6-3 inning-ender. The Bears only got four hits, but their patience at the plate was rewarded with seven walks. Dan Kazell (0-1) took the loss, throwing three innings and allowing one run. He had three walks and gave up two hits, while striking out one. The Bears conclude the two-game series on Wednesday, when they play the Curnhuskers in a 12:35 MT contest. Eric Maydew (3-2, 5.86 ERA) will take the mound for the Bears, against NU's Drew Bowman (3-1, 3.38 ERA). |
