NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane baseball team scored six runs in the
final three innings to break a 3-3 tie and give them the win over
Northern Colorado in the second game of a three-game series.
Northern Colorado is now 7-13 on the season, while Tulane improves
to 13-9.
The Bears scored three runs, all on a home run by senior Kevin
Sandberg, on six hits and played errorless baseball for the second
straight game. The Green Wave scored nine runs on nine hits and
also did not commit any errors.
"We have got to find a way to win," said Head Coach Kevin
Smallcomb. "Kevin's home run tied the score but we couldn't do
anything after that. We also struggled to find the strike zone
again today."
Northern Colorado used six pitchers who combined to walk six
batters and hit another five in the eight innings. Starter Jeff
Sciba takes the loss to move to 1-4 on the year. He threw 5.1
innings, giving up five runs on five hits with three walks and four
strikeouts.
Nate Steinmetz and Forbes Scott each pitched 0.2 innings.
Steinmetz gave up one run on no hits, walking two and fanning one,
while Scott allowed one hit and struck out one. Joe Willman and
Forest Carpenter each were on the hill for 0.1 innings, Willman
getting an out in the only batter he faced and Carpenter gave up
two runs on one hit and walked one. Tony Crudo concluded the game,
pitching the final 0.2 innings allowing one run on two hits,
striking out one.
Sandberg had two of the team's six hits, scoring one and with
three RBI to lead the Bears offensively.
Preston Claiborne took the win for Tulane, bringing his season
record to 2-1. He struck out four in 2.2 innings of work, allowing
just one hit.
Tulane started the second game of the series in the first way as
the first, aggressive on the base paths. Nick Boullosa began the
game with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and
was able to score on a sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead.
Senior Erik Hegstad, who had a 15-game hitting streak snapped in
the first game against the Green Wave, doubled down the left field
line in the second inning but was stranded. Tulane added one run on
two hits in the bottom half of the frame for the 2-0 advantage.
Neither team scored in the third and another stolen base led
Tulane to one more run in the fourth for the 3-0 lead. The fifth
was also scoreless, but the Bears tied the score in the top of the
sixth. Freshman Adam Hilker led off the inning with a walk and
junior Mike Raudenbush singled to center. Senior Andy Mees
sacrificed the pair to second and third, but Sandberg hit his ninth
home run of the year, a blast to left field to knot the score at
3-3.
Three hit batters, a walk and wild pitch gave the lead back to
Tulane, 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth and the Green Wave added one
in the seventh to extend their lead to three, 6-3. A three-run home
run by Jeremy Schaffer on the first pitch of the game by Crudo put
the Green Wave ahead 9-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
The two teams conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1:00
p.m. (Central)/noon (Mountain). The Bears then travel to Lincoln
for two games against the Nebraska Huskers on Tuesday and Wednesday
before beginning a series against Houston Baptist at home on
Friday.
