Baseball Victims Of Stellar Pitching Performance![]() BOXSCORE: at Tulane NEW ORLEANS - Northern Colorado allowed a season-low four runs against a Division I opponent, but it was not enough as Tulane pitcher Conrad Flynn threw a three-hit shutout to defeat the baseball Bears, 4-0. Northern Colorado moves to 7-12 on the season, while Tulane improves to 12-9. Northern Colorado did not draw a walk off Flynn, the first time since March 10, 2008 the Bears had zero walks in a game. Flynn pitched the entire nine innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four. He faced just three more than the minimum. Junior catcher Hunter Nolen caught two Green Wave runners trying to steal, one each in the seventh and eighth and the Bears also picked off a base runner in the sixth. Nolen also had the only extra base hit for the team, a double down the left field line to lead off the eighth inning. The Bears also committed no errors in the contest, the first time this season and the first time since May 23, 2008 against NJIT in the Independent Championship. Freshman Cameron Tallman pitched six innings for the Bears, allowing four runs on four hits. He walked seven and struck out three. Senior Brian Sizemore took over for Tallman in the seventh, throwing two innings, allowing no runs on four hits and striking out one. "We played good baseball for the second straight game," said Head Coach Kevin Smallcomb. "We just couldn't get a hit off Tulane. Our defense was about as good as I've seen it all year and hope it continues." Tallman struck out the first batter of the game, but walked the bases loaded and Tulane was threatening early. Tallman, however, forced designated hitter Jeremy Schaffer into a double play to end the inning with no damage. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Tulane scored two off aggressive base running as Josh Prince stole two bags and scored on a sacrifice fly and the Green Wave added one more on a groundout for the 2-0 lead. Freshman Adam Hilker got the Bears' first hit of the day to lead off the fourth inning with a single to right field and junior Mike Raudenbush had a bunt single. A failed pickoff attempt resulted in an error and both runners advanced 90 feet, but were stranded. Tulane added two runs on two hits with three walks and one hit by pitch in the bottom of the fourth to extend the advantage to four, 4-0 and there was no more scoring on the evening. The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (Central). |
