Greeley, COLO. - The University of Northern Colorado football team fell to 0-7 on the season with a 23-0 loss to Weber State on Homecoming. This was the first home game for the Bears in four weeks.
Junior running back David Woods led the team with 43 yards of rushing and 64 yards of total offense, while junior wide receiver Cory Fauver caught a team-high three passes for 33 yards and also had 17 yards on punt returns. Junior Eric Brown notched 48 yards on kickoff returns and freshman defensive back Max Hewitt returned an interception for 20 yards, the second longest return of the year (Mark Rodden, 25) and his second of the year (Hawai'i).
Defensively, sophomore Stephen Michon led the team with 12 tackles, while junior linebacker Joe Kenney tallied 10 and junior linebacker Cristian Sarmento added nine.
Weber State was led by Trevyn Smith with 113 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Bryant Eteuati caught eight passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 78 yards on returns, 56 on punt returns and 22 on one kickoff return. Bryce Scanlon led the Wildcats with eight tackles, while Kevin Linehan had seven.
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Northern Colorado ran just seven plays for 20 yards, while Weber State had 21 plays for 56 yards. Breazeale was three-for-four passing for 18 yards in the quarter, hitting Barmann, Fauver and Vaden each.
Most of Weber State's scoring occurred in the second quarter as the Wildcats scored three times for 16 points before halftime. The Wildcats tallied 146 yards of offense, while the Bears managed just nine yards on nine plays. Woods caught the only pass of the quarter, a seven-yard gain, while he also gained 35 yards rushing.
The third quarter again so no team break into the scoring column as NC gained 46 yards and WSU gained 87. Birkel, Fauver and Chesla each caught one pass from Breazeale, while Woods gained eight yards and Vaden seven in the rushing game.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats added a touchdown for the final tally of 23-0. The Northern Colorado offense garnered 27 yards, while the Wildcats had 104 yards. The Bears defense forced two turnovers in the quarter, with Max Hewitt interception a pass and returning it 20 yards and sophomore Matt King recovering a fumble.
Northern Colorado hits the road again next weekend, traveling to Missoula, Mont., to take on the top-ranked Montana Grizzlies. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
