Post-Game Quotes: Northern Colorado at Northern Arizona, September 22, 2007

Tight End Ryan Chesla:

"Our defense came up big for us tonight. They played hard, we just couldn't put up enough points tonight. Our defense, they played well throughout."

On injuries in the game:

"It's rough. That turf, you get stuck on and you can't move. It's going to hurt us, those were some big time players out there that got hurt, but we'll be all right."

On what was missing:

"Details. We have to take care of the details. When we do, we're going to surprise some people and start winning some games."

Head Coach Scott Downing:

"We can't afford to miss. Guys had opportunities to make plays. We've got to start converting on some of the plays because this was a tight game. 34-14, yes, but we gave them a field goal there at the end when we tried an on-side kick, but we should have had at least a couple more touchdowns. That's the disappointing thing, but our kids played hard the whole game. They stayed in it and we had some young guys step up because of some injuries, so we need to see what happens."

"I thought we had some guys (defensively) who mixed it up pretty well. We had some guys hitting the gaps and making plays. I think we had a few safeties roll down in there and played pretty well at times. They're (NAU) a dangerous offense because of the running back's ability and the quarterback can take off at any time."

"The linebackers played pretty well tonight, at least the one's I was watching. Cristian Sarmento and Joe Kenney came to play, Casey Herron and Matt King both got after it pretty good. I'm excited with what they did tonight."

"Coming in, we thought NAU was one of the best teams in the league and we leave thinking they're still one of the best teams in the league. They've got a lot of talent. They took Appalachian State to the end of the game a week ago and we knew it would be tough, but I thought our kids hung in there. We had a variety of injuries that forced us to change our lineup many, many times but I thought our kids held on and played pretty well."

On turnovers and momentum:

"There were turnovers on both sides. We score a touchdown late and we got a couple of opportunities to go down and nail another one on the board and change the complexion of the game. We emphasis it in practice; you've got to make the right throw, you've got to make the right catch, the right read on a run. When you do, you've got to secure the football - that's number one.

"I really felt like with David Woods and Tyrone Wilson running up and down on the inside it might have caused the linebackers not to drop back as deep as they usually do and we were able to sneak a couple in behind them and in front of the safeties. A lot of our big plays came off the play action and once we got our quarterback out on the edge we had the chance to make a choice, because our guys were running and the NAU guys were chasing us."
