PARK CITY, Utah -- The Big Sky Conference announced Monday its 2013 preseason polls and preseason all-conference teams, and the Bears were picked to finish eighth by the coaches and media, while senior linebacker Clarence Bumpas earned a spot on the all-conference squad.
The Bears won their last three games and four of their last five in 2012, en route to a 5-6 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Big Sky, and that momentum led to their middle-of-the-pack selection Monday.
Northern Colorado received 239 points in the media poll and 63 in the coaches poll.
Montana State was selected to win the conference by both the coaches and media, while Eastern Washington, Montana, Cal Poly and Northern Arizona rounded out the top five in both lists.
Sacramento State and North Dakota were chosen sixth and seventh, while Southern Utah and Portland State were behind the Bears in ninth and 10th in both polls.
Bumpas (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who is also on the Buck Buchanan Watch List, played in five games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He recorded at least eight tackles in all five games and totaled 49.
As a sophomore in 2011 Bumpas led Northern Colorado and the Big Sky Conference in tackles with 145.
Bumpas and the rest of the Bears open the 2013 season Aug. 31 against Langston University at Nottingham Field. Season tickets are on sale online at www.unco.edu/tickets or 970.351.4849.
