Post game quotes: Northern Colorado at Sacramento State

Post-Game Quotes | Northern Colorado at Sacramento State | Oct. 9, 2010

Head Coach Scott Downing:

On turnovers:
We’ve got to take care of the ball. We’ve got to tackle guys when we’ve got them in the open field. I’m not going to mince any words: I’m very disappointed in our football team. I’m very disappointed in our coaching staff. We obviously didn’t do a great job of getting ready for this game. Hats off to Sac State, they played well. They hit us for some unusual plays – they got us on a fake punt. We didn’t give up any points on that, we ended up getting a turnover. We’ve got to step up to the plate and take a full cut when we’re coming out to play. We can’t ease into the ball game, we’ve got to produce. We have to find a quarterback that’s going to be able to move the chains down the field. We’ve got enough talent out there, we’ve just got to make sure each of us individually takes care of our jobs. It’s not easy to overcome turnovers but the turnovers didn’t kill us. Our own individual play did and we’ve just got to make sure that we as coaches are doing everything we can to make sure our team is the best prepared team that we can have.

On Special Teams:
On those two plays (blocked punt, faked punt) our hats off them. We over-thought the punt that got blocked. We made a protection switch to take advantage of the way they were lined up and our guys on the back side didn’t execute a block. It’s just a technique and he didn’t get his technique done. Other than that, if we get that technique done we’re fine, we’ve got everyone picked up. The fake punt was something, obviously they came out unbalanced set with a backside tackle that was eligible. We had a call where we rushed it, didn’t get there to the punter before he could get the ball off and allowed them to convert it for a first down. Other than that, I felt we had some guys on special teams that were playing very hard. I thought (Dominic) Gunn ran the ball very, very hard today. I thought he did a good job returning it. I thought he and Patrick Walker did a good job on kickoffs today. We’re giving them to many chances to return kickoffs though, we need to kickoff more.

On quarterbacks:
I think number one we have to get Dylan (Orms) back healthy, 100 percent. We’ve got to have somebody who steps up and makes the checks, gets us into the right plays when they show pressure. We’ve got to give him a chance. We’ve got to do a better job as coaches of putting him in the right plays so we can got up and run them. Obviously, we’ve got to hold onto the ball. We had two critical turnovers early in the ballgame when we could have made some hay, but we’ve got to have somebody that grows up awful fast. We’ve got five games left, everything’s still in front of us to do what we want to do and we’ll just see what happens.
