Nine Bears Set Personal Records At Tom Benich Classic

GREELEY, Colo. - Nine personal bests were set or tied by University of Northern Colorado track and field athletes in the Bears' first home meet of the season on Saturday at Nottingham Field.

The Bears had seven top three finishes, and the men's 4x400 relay team of Sherown Campbell, Mike McNay, Chance Fiala and Jared Lewis fell two tenths of a second short of a Northern Colorado record. They finished second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:10.56. Lewis almost led the Bears to victory as he closed the gap in the final leg and fell short by a slim margin.

Sophomore women's athlete Talli Slafter set two personal records on the day, first with a 17-06 leap in the long jump, which helped her to finish in third place. Slafter also recorded a personal-best 15.04 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Veronique Morales took first place honors in the pole vault by tying a personal-best mark of 10-00.

In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Ashley Stec set a new career-best time of 1:02.42, helping her to claim the top spot.

Campbell set a new personal-best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.65, while Lewis also had a career-best in the 200 with a time of 21.61.

Senior Jennifer Kishimoto finished fourth in the 400 hurdles and had a personal record time of 1:04.78.

Sophomore Jamila Young won her heat and finished fourth overall with a personal-best time of 59.34.

Northern Colorado will return to action next Saturday at the University of Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colo.
