Baseball Takes Game One From SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Three runs in the first inning on just one hit helped lead the University of Northern Colorado baseball team to a 4-1 decision over Southeast Missouri State in the first of a four-game set on Friday afternoon. The Bears move to 3-3 on the season, while SEMO moves to 2-2.


Northern Colorado scored four runs on four hits, while the Redhawks got one run on five hits and neither team committed an error.


Chris Reap got his first win of the season in his second appearance, throwing six innings. He gave up just one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Eric Skufca came on to pitch two innings giving up just one hit and striking out two, while Chad Murray picked up a save in his first appearance on the mound. He retired all three batters he faced, striking out one.


Each of the first three hitters in the Bears lineup scored a run, with Sean Zyer, Adam Symons and Andy Mees crossing the plate in the first inning.


Zyer reached on a lead-off walk, while Symons singled to left field and Mees walked to load the bases. Kevin Sandberg also reached on a walk, scoring Zyer, and Symons scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Murray. Sandberg moved to second and Mees moved to third on a wild pitch and Mees scored on another errant pitch.


The Redhawks got back one run in the bottom of the third, but the Bears answered with one run in the top of the fourth. Erik Hegstad led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a long fly to right field by Erik Whinery. Jeff Horn then doubled to left to score Hegstad.


Dus Renfrow pitched the first five innings for SEMO, picking up the loss, allowing four runs on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Lanc Rhodes pitched two innings, Ryan Poole threw 1.2 and An Stephens pitched the final one-third, striking out his only batter faced.


The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow for a double header and then close the series with a lone game on Sunday.
