PEORIA, Ariz. – Former Northern Colorado right-handed baseball standout Joe Sawicki has been named to the Sonoran Explorers in the new Freedom Baseball League.

Sawicki finished his playing career with the Bears in 2011 after striking out 174 in his five years with a 15-15 record. In 2010, he was named the Great West Conference Pitcher of the Year and six times earned the league’s Pitcher of the Week honor. As a senior, Sawicki earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

“I’m very excited to be playing baseball again,” said Sawicki. “This is a great opportunity for me to continue my career.”

The Freedom Baseball League is an Independent Professional Baseball Team with six teams throughout Arizona. Four teams will begin play in 2012 with two more joining in 2013. The Sonoran Explorers will play at the Peoria Sports Complex, while the Copper State Prospectors play in Phoenix, the Montezuma Federals will play in Yavapai and the Arizona Centennials will call Scottsdale home.

Sawicki and the rest of the Explorers begin play on May 30 at home against the Centennials and continue through Sept. 4. Complete rosters and more information will be available soon at: http://www.freedomprobaseballleague.com/.
