Berggren honored again by Great West

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Northern Colorado's Jarod Berggren has been named Great West Conference Player of the Week while Houston Baptist's Dalton Schafer has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week for their individual performances last week. The honors were announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Berggren, a junior from Broomfield, Colo., led the Bears to a perfect 5-0 record last week with a non-conference win over in-state rival Air Force and a four-game sweep of conference opponent Texas-Pan American. Against Air Force, the outfielder hit the game-winner, a two-run home run in the top of the ninth after fouling off five straight to give the Bears the win.

In the series against UTPA, Berggren hit .500 with four of his eight hits going for extra bases. On Sunday, he had five RBI in the nine run fifth-inning, hitting a three-run home run and a two-run single to help secure the series sweep. All of the damage was against the best pitching in the conference as UTPA leads the league in team ERA.

In the field, Berggren also made two diving catches saving extra bases in the first game against the Broncs. He also broke the school career record for triples on Saturday and now has 13 in his career.

This is the second-time in three weeks Berggren has been named player of the week in the conference and the third time in his career. He is now hitting .404 in conference play with 10 of his 19 hits going for extra bases for a slugging percentage of .766.
