GREELEY, Colo. – Senior Brooke Braden assisted on each of UNC's two bookend goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 triumph over New Mexico State Sunday at Jackson Stadium.
The win gave the Bears (5-1, 0-0 Big Sky) one of the best starts in program history, and capped an impressive weekend in which UNC recorded victories over a pair of opponents that entered the weekend a combined 7-1-1.
UNC also posted four goals, its most in nearly three years, since a 6-0 home win over North Dakota, Oct. 31, 2014.
Those four scores came from four players, including two younger contributors who each posted their season's first goals. And, the win came against a formidable Aggies club (4-2-1) that hadn't lost entering the weekend.
Senior Aleah Strength recorded her first 2017 goal right out of the gates, just into the fourth minute. Braden, who scored the game-winning tally Friday night to beat New Hampshire, delivered a nice cross and Strength nailed the shot from 8 feet out.
Then, with just 17 seconds left in the first half on a de-ja-vu play, Braden again fired a nice cross into the box, where sophomore Kylee Duren used her left foot to find the net past a diving Ashley Martin.
In the 49th minute, sophomore Olivia Seddon got into the goal column, the beneficiary of a beautiful crossing pass from Maddie Roberts. Jacqui Pulley, who found Roberts in the corner, also got an assist on the play.
Finally, Roberts took the team lead with her season's fourth goal with just over three minutes left in regulation. She took a crossing pass from Mariel Gutierrez to the left side of the box to give the Bears a 4-1 advantage.
In goal, senior co-captain Madeline Burdick shut out the Aggies over the game's first 73 minutes until NMSU's Jody Hernandez connected on a pop-up goal just out of Burdick's reach. The goal snapped Burdick's stretch of 166 minutes without allowing a score.
The Bears continue their homestand Friday at Jackson Stadium, where they'll meet North Dakota State (0-6-0). The 7 p.m. match is free to the public.
