Big Sky coaches give Northern Colorado runner-up status in first poll
Ogden, Utah - The Northern Colorado Volleyball team was selected to finish second in the 2017 Big Sky by the Preseason Coaches' Poll.
UNC finished the 2016 season second in the North Division with an 18-11 record and 12-4 in Big Sky play and came up one game short of hosting the conference tournament. They unfortunately lost to Idaho State in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The Bears received two first place votes and 103 points overall after returning five starters and four additional letter winners from the 2016 roster. The veteran group includes All-Big Sky second team selections senior Alex Kloehn and junior Kortney Lockey.
North Dakota was picked to repeat as Big Sky champions after receiving 10 of the 12 first place votes and 120 points overall. They will be one of the main challenges for the Bears this season. The Fighting Hawks return nine letter winners, including six starters from last season. Big Sky Conference Most Valuable player Sydney Griffin returns for her senior season All-Big Sky first team selections senior Faith Dooley and senior Tamara Merseli.
Northern Colorado was followed in the poll by Sacramento State at third with 99 points and Northern Arizona, who received 96 points. Portland State rounded out the top five with 82 points and Idaho State was selected sixth with 71 points.
Idaho (63), Weber State (49), Eastern Washington (44), Montana State (24), Montana (21), and Southern Utah (20) filled out the second half of the poll.
The 50th season for Northern Colorado Volleyball opens with an exhibition match against Wyoming on August 18 at 6 p.m. The Bears will play their annual Alumni Match the following
day (8/19) at 7 p.m. UNC plays their first official match of the season at the 2017 Northern Colorado/Colorado St Volleyball Classic against UCF on August 28 at 7 p.m. Northern Colorado opens Big Sky play on September 21 at Northern Arizona University.

UNC is once again offering the Family Pack for just $125, featuring two adult and two child tickets with each additional child ticket for larger families being prorated. Individuals and companies wishing to support the Bears and the Northern Colorado community can also purchase Send-A-Bear tickets for just $25 each with those tickets being donated to area youth and non-profit groups.
