Courtney Smith's impressive final week of the regular season earns her co-Player of the Week honors
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado's Courtney Smith's strong final week of the regular season helped her earn co-Big Sky Player of the Week honors, announced Saturday night by the conference. She split the honor with Montana State's Payton Ferris
Smith was unstoppable for Northern Colorado averaging 22.5 points, 8.5 rebound on 75.9 percent shooting. She started the week out with her fourth double-double of the season as she was the catalyst for the Bears in a 57-50 win over Portland State. Smith scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds while shooting 10-of-17 for the game.
She then did not mess when UNC traveled to Sacramento State, hitting on all 12 of her shots for 24 points. Against the Hornets, Smith also had six rebounds in the 102-74 win.
Ferris earned a split of the honor with Smith by recording back-to-back double-doubles to guide Montana State to its second straight Big Sky Conference regular-season title and the No. 1 seed at the league tournament. For the two games, the Twin Bridges, Mont., product averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds per game, while shooting a whopping 72 percent (18-25) from the field, including 57 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, she averaged 2.5 assists per game, averaging 27 minutes per contest.
Against Idaho State, Ferris posted 22 points and a career-matching 12 rebounds. She followed that with 22 points and ten boards in the season finale' with Weber State. The double-double against WSU was the eighth Ferris' career. She also finished the season with ten games scoring 20 or more points.
Smith and the Bears will begin the Big Sky Tournament on Wednesday night against the winner of Idaho State and Montana. Tip-off for that game is set for 8:05 pm PT, 9:05 pm MT.
