Greeley, Colo. – Rolling off their fourth victory of the season and third consecutive home win of 2016, the Northern Colorado Women's Soccer team welcomes the University of Nebraska at Omaha into Jackson Stadium Friday night.
Tuesday's victory over Wyoming was only the fifth time in school history that the Bears bested the Cowgirls. Not only did goalkeeper Madeline Burdick pick up her seventh career shutout, but Mariel Gutierrez grabbed her fourth goal of the season and the Bears retained the Front Range Derby trophy for another season.
Gutierrez's game winning goal now ties her with Danielle Birdsall for most all-time in Division I history with six.
The Bears face their second summit league opponent of the season, counting the win in the early season exhibition game against South Dakota State. Friday will also mark the 12th matchup between Northern Colorado and Omaha. UNC owns the all-time record with a mark of 7-4.
Omaha is coming off of a tie, 0-0, Wednesday night against fellow Big Sky Conference opponent Eastern Washington. It was the second of three Big Sky teams the Mavericks will face this season. Omaha defeated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 2-0 back in August.
Since that victory, though, Omaha has lost three of its last four games.
Scouting the Bears
-Northern Colorado ranks tied for first in the Big Sky Conference in shutouts with three.
-Through eight games the Bears have taken the second most corner kicks in the Big Sky with 35
-Mariel Gutierrez leads the conference in points with 10 (4 goals, 2 assists).
-Madeline Burdick's 41 saves on the season lands her with the third best mark in the Big Sky and she leads the conference with three individual shutouts.
Scouting the Mavericks
-Head coach Don Klosterman (18th year) returns eight of his starters from last season, including goalkeeper Katlyn Schochenmaier, the two-time Summit League Player of the Week.
-Forward Carlie Cook ranks second in the Summit League in goals (4) and first in points (10).
-Omaha is third in its conference in Goals Against Average at 1.11 per contest.
-Omaha has taken the second least amount of shots in the Summit League with 75.
Penalty Kicks
Tuesday night Mariel Gutierrez scored her second game-winning goals of the season, giving her six so far in her short career. With that mark, Gutierrez is now tied for most game-winning goals in Northern Colorado Division I history.
The Bears are off to a 3-0 record at home this season, their best stint since they won five consecutive home games in 2014. UNC has gone unbeaten is seven consecutive home games four separate times (1996, 1997, 2007 and 2013).
Northern Colorado's win over Wyoming gives them a final 3-0-1 record against the Mountain West Conference this season. That's the best record against any one conference for a Big Sky school this season.
Goalkeeper Madeline Burdick has now moved into a tie for third place in UNC Division I history in shutouts (7) and 11th place all-time in saves (93).
What to watch for
Northern Colorado will be keeping a watchful eye on the Colorado Cup match between Denver and Colorado. Should Denver emerge victorious, the Bears would win the cup for the first time in school history. UNC is already poised for its best finish in the Cup's six year history.
