Offense and Defense Show Growth in @UNCBEARSFB Night Scrimmage
8/20/2016 9:53:00 PM | Football
GREELEY, Colo. – A crowd of nearly 200 swarmed the hill at the Butler-Hancock Practice Fields for UNC's night scrimmage on Saturday.
(8/20/2016) Football Second Scrimmage
Both sides showed flashes of the season to come and head coach Earnest Collins Jr. was happy with the progression his team has made over the past 20 days.
"Overall, it was just a great night and a great atmosphere to come out and play ball with all the people that showed up to support us," Collins said. "Football wise, we saw what we needed to see. The first team offense came out and moved the ball well - it was good to see Jacob (Knipp) throw a nice pass in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. The defense came up with two great interceptions and tackled well, but more importantly no one got hurt, so I'm happy."
SCORING DRIVES
Saturday's scrimmage was more about giving the second and third team as many reps as possible, so the solidified first team was limited to just two reps on offense, but still produced a scoring drive.
Redshirt sophomore QB, Jacob Knipp led the only touchdown drive on the evening. Knipp went 55 yards on 10 plays, capping it off with a 23 yard TD pass to redshirt sophomore tight end, Theron Verna. Verna caught two big passes on the night and accumulated 35 yards receiving and one trip to pay dirt.
Senior quarterback, Kyle Sloter got the majority of the work under center with 5 series. He led one scoring drive that led to a 32-yard field goal from senior kicker, Jamie Falloon. That drive was good for 36 yards on 11 plays after starting on the home 33 yard line.
"PICKING" UP THE SLACK
The defense came up with two INTS, one returned nearly 80 yards for a touchdown from freshman CB Denario Critton. The other came near the goal line from senior safety Kaelen Russell who robbed Sloter and senior wide out Stephen Miller of a touchdown.
D-LINE WORK
The team gave a special shout out to defensive linemen Weston Gadient, Keenan Leary and Eddie Gonzales for picking up the slack during fall camp. With injuries to starting interior, those three took extra reps during practices with both the first and second teams and didn't miss a day of practice.
Gadient had an especially great night coming up with two sacks for five yards.
YOUNG SECONDARY MATURES
Redshirt freshman cornerback, Marshaun Cameron was everywhere on the field. Cameron was in on 10 tackles and notched one PBU and one sack.
Vincent Heard, Jerone Jackson,Denario Critton, Sherand Boyd Jr. and Keifer Glau have all come a long way in a week's time. The game is starting to slow down for them and they are taking better routes to receivers and had some impressive open field tackles.
TUBBS STEALS THE SHOW
Freshman QB Elway Tubbs came out firing in his first opportunity to display his talents during live action. Tubbs, who's missed the last few days of practice due to freshman orientation didn't seem to miss a beat. The 6-0 QB went 6-of-12 for 69 yards with two pass completions over 15 yards. He also threw a rocket 44 yards down the field and connected with junior wide out, Frank Stephens for a guaranteed touchdown, but the play was called back for offensive pass interference.
Tubbs' big completions of 15 yards and 18 yards were to redshirt freshman receiver, Patrick Stephens.
LITTRELL GETS FULLBACK WORK
Redshirt freshman linebacker, Justice Littrell switched sides toward the end of the scrimmage and played fullback for three drives.
Littrell who's nicknamed "bus" showed why he's earned that title. He showed no fear running through the gap to take on incoming linebackers head-to-head.
The redshirt freshmen even came up with two catches for 14 yards on a pair of wheel routes.
ON TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN
With fall camp over, the team now focuses its sights on the home opener against Rocky Mountain College on Sept. 3.
Over the next two weeks UNC will game plan for the Battlin' Bears. The coaches will solidify their game day roster and create a scout team. Team captains are also expected to be named within the week.
Northern Colorado will get Sunday, August 21 and Monday, August 22 off due to the start of fall classes. The team will move to its 7:00 a.m. practice schedule beginning on Tuesday, August 23.
