Junior Kala Keltz carded back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1) to finish in first place after 36 holes.
ROUNDS 1 & 2
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Northern Colorado women's golf landed in the Top 10 after the first two rounds at the Montana State Bobcat Spring Invitational on Monday. The Bears carded rounds of 310 and 307 for a total of 617 (+41).
UNC is behind only Eastern Washington out of the six Big Sky Schools in the field. The Eagles have a six stroke advantage over the Bears heading into Tuesday's finale.
Seattle and Wyoming are tied for the lead, both coming into the clubhouse with team totals of 600 (+24).
Junior Kala Keltz had two of her best rounds of the spring shooting 71 (-1) back-to-back to sit in sole possession of first place by a stroke.
Keltz was good for eight birdies and 22 pars in her 18 holes. Her eight birdies are currently tied for the tournament high.
In round one, Keltz carded nine consecutive pars from the 4th to the 13th and finished with only one bogey and two birdies on the back to finish at -1 under.
Keeping with her consistency, the junior was even par at the turn again on the second 18. She holed bogey on the 10th, but quickly recovered with birdie on the very next hole. After two pars she again bogeyed the 14th, but notched back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th to come in at -1 under.
"It was fun to watch Kala post back-to-back under par rounds today and put herself in a good spot individually heading into the final round," head coach Stephen Bidne said. "She found a groove early on and she played as if she was on autopilot, hitting just about every fairway and green in regulation."
Fellow junior Baile Winslow landed in a spot in the Top 25. Winslow ended with rounds of 81 (+9) and 74 (+2) coming in tied for 24th on the leaderboard.
Winslow racked up 25 pars and two birdies, but marked two holes of double or higher throughout the 36 holes that hindered an otherwise solid day. The 25 pars are the fifth most made among the field of 98.
Senior Nicole Okada and freshman Janet Yeo finished with one stroke separating the pair. Okada came into the clubhouse after rounds of 78 (+6) and 82 (+10), while Yeo fired an 81 (+9) and an 80 (+8) in the double 18-hole day.
Okada heads into Tuesday in a tie for 51st and Yeo sits in 54th.
In a very uncharacteristic day, senior Amanda Myers rounded out the team.
Myers finished with an 80 (+8) in the morning session and an 85 (+13) in the afternoon. She sits tied for 68th overall. This was the first time all season Myers recorded back-to-back rounds in the 80s.
"Tomorrow we need to come out hungry and play the way we know we can play," Bidne added. "This course is relatively long is demanding around the greens, but there are birdies to me made out there. It's going to take everyone coming together for use to make a charge, but these girls are fighters and we're not going out without a fight."
The last 18 holes of the Bobcat Invite begins on Tuesday, April 12 with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. (MT).
