Savannah Smith earned the program's first ever Mid-Major Player of the Week award from College Sports Madness
GREELEY, Colo. – A 3-0 week, including wins over a pair of mid-major Top 25 teams helped Savannah Smith earn the College Sports Madness Mid-Major and Big Sky Player of the Week award.
Against Denver, Florida Gulf Coast and San Diego she averaged 20.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 steals. She shot an impressive 42.9 percent from the field, including making nine threes and hit 89.5 percent of her free throw attempts.
This marks the first time in UNC's history that a player has earned the CSM Mid-Major Player of the Week honor, and first of both Mid-Major and Big Sky honor for Smith.
Smith led Northern Colorado in scoring twice over those three games with a career-high 25 points in a double overtime win against FGCU and dropped another 21 points, including the go ahead basket with 17.3 seconds left to put the team past San Diego.
Against Denver she matched her career-high in steals with three, the same amount she got against the Pioneers the previous season.
For the year, Smith is leading the team with 18.8 points per game and 3.3 assists per game. She has almost been automatic from the free throw line this season hitting 19 of her 21 attempts this year.
Smith and her teammates hit the road for the first time this week when they take part in the UTSA Tournament on Friday and Sunday. UNC will face the host Roadrunners Friday and then take on Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
