Butler comes to Greeley from the University of Southern Utah.
GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Jeff Butler as the new Director of Sports Performance.
Butler joins the Sports Performance staff of Zach Margolis, who was recently promoted to the Director of Sports Performance for Olympic Sports and Katie Simon, the Assistant Director of Sports Performance.
Both Margolis and Butler report to Sarah Adams, the Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator.
Butler is very familiar with Big Sky football, coming to the Bears from Southern Utah where he was Director of Strength and Conditioning and fully responsible for the training of the Thunderbirds 2015 Conference championship team.
"After an extensive search process, I am very pleased to add Coach Butler to our staff. He has extensive experience working with football and many other sports programs, especially in our conference," Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said. "He brings passion, excitement and tremendous experience to a critical position within the department . He and his wife, Katie will be a great addition to the UNC family."
Jeff had also served as the assistant director for six months at SUU before being promoted.
Prior to Southern Utah, Butler was at the University of Montana where he served as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning for football, track and field, volleyball and tennis. He was at UM for two years and again helped train a football team that reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
He got his first full-time job in the industry at Dartmouth and his resume also includes work experience at Mississippi College, North Carolina State and Arkansas.
Butler played two seasons of football at Appalachian State and two more at Mississippi College, and he points to the variety of strength and conditioning coaches he experienced during his playing days as his reason for getting into the profession.
Recruited out of Fayetteville, Ark., Butler played at Appalachian State in 2003 and '04 before following his family to Mississippi and playing for the Choctaws for two additional seasons. He left the Mountaineers just prior to their run of three consecutive national championships, from 2005-07.
Butler graduated from Mississippi College in December 2007 with a degree in exercise science and earned a master's degree in kinesiology from Arkansas in 2013.
Butler's certifications include:
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
- USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach
- Certified through Functional Movements Screen
