GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado women's soccer team inked two ladies today for their 2015 class. Coach Tim Barrera hit the ground running, pulling in two Colorado kids from highly touted high schools and club teams.
Â
"We are very excited to bring these two student-athletes into the Bears family with a young returning team," said Barrera. Â "These young ladies have a tremendous knowledge of the game and will fit right in with the team we already have in place. With the Bears only graduating one player (Julia Grover) we wanted to bring in a couple of players that could make an impact. Â Both players are good students, hard-working fit players that love to compete and will get better." Â
Â
The first locally signee is Maddie Roberts from Parker, Colorado. Roberts who is a 5'6 midfield for Legend High School and for her club teams, the Colorado Storm ECNL and Heat FC out of Las Vegas. She has already had some UNC impact in her game, playing for former player Kari Hamilton who is her high school coach. Roberts will join her form Heat teammate, Aleah Strength who was a part of last year's class.Â
Â
"We have known about Maddie for a long time from our former player Kari Hamilton," said Barrera. "Maddie is very athletic and extremely competitive. Â She can play a variety of positions from outside back to forward. Â She has had the unique opportunity to play for ECNL teams in two different states with both Storm and Heat." Â
Â
Mariel Gutierrez would round out the class for the Bears, a 5'4 attacking player from Gypsum, Colorado. Gutierrez currently plays for Eagle Valley High School and Coach Stephan Baxter and has had the opportunity to play at a couple different clubs in Colorado. In the winter Gutierrez plays on the high school basketball team as a point guard.
Â
"We found Mariel playing for the Colorado West Select team for Erin Sharp, who was coaching Colorado Mesa at the time," said Barrera. "Mariel is a very creative attacking player. Â She can play as a forward or as an attacking midfielder. Mariel has a tremendous first touch, great vision and is a true playmaker." Â
Â
The Bears return 10 starters plus Morgan Rynearson and Ambree Bellin, another two starters who were out due to injury in 2014.
Â
UNC will start their spring season against CSU on Feb. 22.
Â
A more complete schedule will be released later.
