Stone and Barrett Named Student-Athletes of the Month for OctoberOctober Student-Athlete of the Month Release in PDF Format
Stone recorded a double-double in seven of the team's eight games in the month, and the Bears won five games during that span. In October, Stone averaged a team-high 3.10 kills/game and 3.52 digs/game, which was second best on the team. Stone stepped up her play both offensively and defensively as the team began to wind down its first trip through Big Sky Conference play. In an October 7 match against Weber State, Stone set a new season and career-high with 19 kills. Two week later, playing against Northern Arizona she again set a career milestone with a 20-dig performance. In his lone competition of the month, Barrett finished as the runner-up in the Open B singles bracket at the University of New Mexico Balloon Fiesta Tournament held Oct. 6-8. Barrett began the tournament with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Cody Gaby in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Barrett again came through in the clutch, as he defeated Wilton Atkins 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. In the semifinals, Barrett put together a dominating performance en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mitchell Brown. Barrett nearly pulled it out in the finals against Michael Beron when he came up just short in the second set, 7-6, after dropping the first set 6-0. He finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. The Student-Athlete of the Month program is designed to recognize the athletic accomplishments of Northern Colorado student-athletes.
