GREELEY, Colo. - Several University of Northern Colorado student-athletes attended the "Success for Family Growth" Parent Education Symposium, held Thursday, February 15 at Shawsheen Elementary in Greeley.

The event was held by the Promises for Children Training and Events Committee, through the help of the United Way of Weld County, and offers several parent education sessions focusing on early childhood development, school readiness skills and/or parenting tips.

Football players Joel Fassler, Andy Muns, Jacob Thornbrue and James Zapp, as well as women's basketball players Sara Hemmings and Chelsie Luhring all spoke with the children during the event. Topics ranged from what sports the student-athletes participate in, what their favorite elementary subject was, where they're from, favorite T.V. show and movies and what they want to be when they grow up.

Below are excerpts from the student-athletes' conversations with the kids.

Jacob Thornbrue

"I believe the kids should understand that we are student-athletes and school gives you the foundation for everything in life, including athletics and the rest of your future."

"Sometimes you go through different stages in life where you feel different and could be made fun of, but you must go through them with self-confidence knowing who you are and you will come through it and grow out of it."

Chelsie Luhring

"I play sports because it teaches sportsmanship, teamwork and creates long-lasting friendships."

"Being in sports makes you set goals and helps you to be responsible and stay on track academically."

James Zapp

"In order to succeed in school, you must start good study habits right now, because it will help in all aspects of life.

"Get into as many clubs and sports as possible, because it will help you build a strong base for the future."

Andy Muns

"Manage your time effectively and use your planners now, so when you get to high school and college, you'll be ready."

Joel Fassler

"Go to classes! If you miss class, you can never completely catch up."

Sara Hemmings

"Do as much as you can in middle school and elementary school - clubs, sports, etc."
