From the Athletic Director

Why are we starting basketball games at 5:30 & 7:30 on weeknights?
"This year the NCC moved games from the traditional Friday/Saturday to Thursday/ Saturday. This was due to Morningside leaving the conference and the traditional travel partners being changed around. This will change in the future since it is our last year in the NCC. Future schedules will be determined by other factors not yet known. This year will give us an opportunity to evaluate the pros and cons of this start time but it was felt with Friday being a school day starting early would permit school age kids to see more of the games and get home earlier."

Why are we playing basketball games at 2 & 4 on weekends?
"Again the schedules changed and many of the coaches requested early starts on Saturdays since they now had all day Friday to rest up. We also wanted to see what would happen playing Saturday afternoon games. Thinking this would allow folks to go out afterwards. Also the early starts provide an opportunity for the traveling teams to get home earlier."

Why are we playing basketball games in conference on Thursday and Saturday?
"Today the conference only has 9 members which doesn't allow for everyone to have a travel partner. One option was to have UNC not have a travel partner but the rest of the league would. While some others favored this plan it would have put our teams at a severe competitive disadvantage by having to play back to back games while everyone else would only have one game on the week they played us."

What can we do about KFKA not broadcasting all of the UNC women's basketball games live?
"I can only encourage everyone to call KFKA and ask that they broadcast the games live."

About the move to Division I next year ....
"I think the thing to remember in the transition is the main reason we are making the move is to be more closely associated with our peer instiutions. And the second thing is to remember the landscape of Division II sports is changing dramatically. Two of our better rivals are also making the move, although a year after us, South Dakota State University and North Dakota State University. Recently, Division II added 25 new members with an average enrollment of 2,000. At the just concluded NCAA Convention, the membership voted on a resolution to review athletic grant-in-aid at Division II institutions. This is a move that might result in the reduction of grant-in-aid opportunities for Division II student-athletes."

FAQ's About the Move to Divison I

Why make the move?
The Division II (D-II) classification underrates UNC, which has three times the undergraduate enrollment of the average D-2 school and is larger than the average Division I (D-I) institution. A higher profile for the university would mean greater value for its degrees.

What is the timing?
The university spent nearly three years studying the issue. It has filed with the NCAA its intent to move to Division I by September 1, 2003. 2003-04 would be the first reclassification season, when games against D-I opponents can be scheduled. In 2004-05, more games would be scheduled against D-I opponents. By 2007, UNC will have moved from reclassification to active Division I status.

Which sports will move?
All sports would move. Football would play Division I-AA and the other sports would play D-I.

How will the move support the academic mission?
It will allow UNC to affiliate more closely with peer institutions. D-I initial academic eligibility requirements are higher than D-II. More scholarships would bring more student-athletes to UNC.
