Travis Owen joined head coach Shana Easley's staff in 2016 as an assistant.
Owen comes from Radford University, where he helped the Highlanders achieve a 23-win improvement from the previous season, a mark that was tops amongst all Division I schools.
During his tenure at Radford, Owen helped the Highlanders to multiple statistical improvements, including a conference-leading 77 doubles, an ERA improvement from 6.66 to 2.90 and a jump from ninth to fourth in the Big South Conference in both fielding percentage and runs scored. With Owen's help, the Highlanders also set a program record with 612 assists on the season and finished the year with 35 wins, climbing 96 spots in the RPI rankings.
Owen arrives in Greeley with fasptich experience that extends beyond the borders of the United States. Prior to Radford, Owen spent time coaching and playing fastpitch in New Zealand. Working with the Howick Softball Club out of Auckland, Owen helped lead the Premier Women's team to a top eight national finish while also acting as the club's Developmental Officer. On top of running a nine-week winter softball academy, Owen implemented hitting, pitching, and coaching clinics within the club while additionally serving as the liaison between local schools interested in improving and developing their softball programs.
In 2013, as the head coach of the Lyon College Scots, Owen led the NAIAprogram to its third best finish in program history. On top of improving the team's batting average by 68 percentage points (to over .300), the Scots added 31 stolen bases, decreased their number of errors by 50 and lowered their team ERA by almost a full run (.96 points) from the previous year.
Before his coaching stint at Lyon, Owen served as an assistant coach at Northern State University for two years. In his first year, he helped the Division II Wolves achieve a 10-win improvement from the past season, finishing with their best record in program history at the time. Owen's main responsibilities included out-of-region recruiting efforts, assisting with practice planning and skill development of all positions and developing the team's strength and conditioning program.
Owen graduated magna cum laude from Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2007, and obtained his Master's degree from Northern State in 2011, after finishing as a graduate assistant. Owen began his coaching career as a sports performance intern at the University of Louisville in 2010.
